# Bulk SMS

> Bulk SMS is the sending of one message, usually personalised, to a large list of phone numbers at once through a gateway, typically from an uploaded file or an API batch call.

Bulk SMS means sending to a list rather than to one person: a promotion to 50,000 customers, a service notice to every subscriber in a region, a reminder to everyone with an appointment tomorrow. The list is uploaded or pushed through an API, each row can carry variables for personalisation, and the gateway prices the send per destination before anything leaves.

Doing it well is mostly about the list (valid, deduplicated, consented numbers), the timing (local windows and quiet hours) and the sender (a name where the country allows it, a number where it does not). The delivery report afterwards is what turns a first campaign into a cleaner second one.
