# Shared sender

> A shared sender is a numeric sender used by many accounts on a gateway, assigned automatically for one-way traffic where names are not delivered or not yet registered.

Gateways keep a pool of numbers per destination and send one-way traffic from them when a name cannot be used. It costs nothing, needs no setup and delivers reliably; the trade-off is that replies are not routed back to you and the number is not recognisably yours.

Shared senders are the default fallback during a registration wait and the permanent state in numeric-only markets when no dedicated number is rented.
