# Smishing

> Smishing is phishing by SMS: a message that impersonates a bank, a carrier, a delivery company or a public service to make the recipient tap a link or reveal credentials. Gateways block it and close the accounts behind it.

Because SMS is trusted and read within minutes, it is the channel of choice for fraud. Operators respond with content filters, sender registration and URL scanning, which is why legitimate senders are told to avoid shorteners and to keep codes free of links. Every smishing wave makes filtering stricter for everyone.

Gateways that carry such traffic lose their routes; the ones that police it keep them.
